Dear ACT Disc Golf Members,

I’m pleased to provide you with an update following our last report in August, highlighting recent club activities and our future plans. In this update, I’ll touch upon several key areas of interest:

  • Spring Sling 2023
  • Athllon Park, Tuggeranong
  • School Course Collaborations
  • Club Shirts

We recently celebrated our second club event of the year, Spring Sling, held at Athllon Park. This marked the second edition of the event and saw tremendous success. The tournament was fully booked a week in advance, attracting 75 players who competed across 11 divisions. These events are only made possible by the dedication of our volunteers and the support of our valued sponsors.

I extend my heartfelt gratitude to our title sponsor, The Green Shed, and our other sponsors:

  • Obi from The Property Collective
  • Cross Tasman Discs
  • Disc Connection
  • Disc Go
  • TV Magic
  • Tattoo Power
  • Flying Disc Store
  • The Tee Off
  • DiscGolf Justice
  • Jindy Disc Golf; and
  • PRKD Media for capturing the event

A special thanks also goes out to the volunteers who assisted in various capacities, from installing basket sleeves to setting up for the event. Your contribution is greatly appreciated. I’d like to acknowledge the following volunteers, and please accept my apologies if I inadvertently missed anyone – Jade Brady, Monir Farhadi, Aaron Curtis, Joshua Conroy, Dan Frost, Andy Irons, Angelo Arcidiacono, Nicholas Hall, Roland Kaschula, Carol Hartley and our TD Phil Tweed.

On a final note regarding the event, I want to congratulate all the club members who emerged as winners in their respective divisions, namely Dan Frost (MPO), Shane Bailey (MA3), Angelo Arcidiacono (MA40), and Joshua Conroy (MA50).

At Athllon Park, the Spring Sling tournament featured a modified blue tee layout with elements of white holes incorporated. We have a course design ready for a red, white, and blue layout, awaiting the installation of permanent baskets.

The red course is slated for completion around November 10th, and it will be positioned on the Wanniassa side of the bridge, offering a more compact layout. The white and blue layouts will extend towards the lake, and our aim is to make them playable by the end of December.

While we’re working through some design complexities, the TCCS has advised us about potential impacts from the duplication of Athllon Drive on 1-2 holes. The good news is that our initial design accounted for such scenarios, with pre-approved holes that can be implemented as a contingency.

In our previous update, I mentioned that the club was engaging with local schools to establish 9-hole beginner courses around Canberra. We’ve made headway with two schools, Alfred Deakin and Gold Creek. Partnering with schools to install these courses is a fantastic way to expand the presence of Disc Golf in our community and attract younger players to the sport and, hopefully, to our club. Keep an eye on our social channels for news on a special club pop-up event when the school installations are complete.

Lastly, the club shirts that were previewed earlier in the year have been ordered and are en route to our club. We anticipate their arrival within the next two weeks, with our fingers crossed that they’ll be here in time for the nationals, allowing our members to proudly represent the club on the interstate stage.Thank you for your ongoing support.

Sincerely,

Adam Stewart
